Royal Doulton purchased the Beswick porcelain company who were well known for their quality lifelike representations of animals and birds. Royal Doulton believed that their famous name and background would improve sales and although the Beswick moulds were used the Royal Doulton backstamp was applied to the product. The expected boost to the sales didn’t eventuate as the quality animals were known as Beswick animals and not Royal Doulton hence the Royal Doulton cats are quite rare as their production was short lived and the backstamp reverted to Beswick.
